An Operating System is the software which interacts with the hardware of a computer system and functions as the intermediary between the installed applications and the hardware, including peripheral devices such as a printer, a computer mouse or a keyboard. When you run software, it transmits requests to the OS through an API (Application Program Interface) and the communication is done through a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Just like a personal computer, web servers also have an Operating System that functions as a host for all of the software installed on them, including script applications or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, etcetera. A virtual machine can be generated on a physical one, so it is possible to install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast to the physical server host OS.
Multiple OS in VPS Servers
Our VPS server packages feature three Linux distributions that you may select from for the Operating System of your new web server - Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS. Apart from being free, the OSs are very stable and safe and the key reason to offer all 3 of them is to ensure that you'll be able to run every application that you'd like, because different pieces of software have different requirements in terms of the environment they can be used on. Each one of the three OSs is backed by a huge community of developers who have created many hundreds of software packages that you can set up and use on your VPS. In accordance with the Operating System which you select, you will also be able to select between 3 different Control Panels to manage your hosting content. Of course, should you decide that you need some other OS, we can always re-install the server with it. As a paid upgrade, we also offer weekly updates of the OS for optimum stability and security.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Servers
If you decide to buy one of our dedicated servers, you'll find three Operating Systems on the order page as we want to give you a larger choice regarding the system environment on the machine as different apps could have specific requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian feature different modules developed by their vast support communities, so you can select any of these OSs and enjoy a stable and safe web hosting service. Depending on your choice, you will also have different Control Panels to choose from. Of course, we can always change the Operating System if the one you have selected in the beginning does not meet the requirements of the software which you want to run. We can also upgrade the OS regularly to keep it as risk-free as possible through our Managed Services upgrade package.
